The east coast of Unguja, the main island of Zanzibar, is a long line of pale sand where the tide goes out a surprising distance and the Indian Ocean stays warm all year. A few miles inland the scene changes: spice farms, village lanes and, on the west side, the coral-stone houses of Stone Town. It is an island of old trading routes and slow days, and it suits a holiday with no fixed agenda. At present I arrange a holiday villa in Zanzibar on request, rather than from a set selection.
